What is Glamping?

Added to the UK dictionary in 2016, glamping literally means glamourous camping. So, rather than putting up your own tent and sleeping on the floor, imagine proper beds, cosy fires, cooking facilities and homely touches. The glamping craze has spread all over the world in various forms, including:

  • Glamping huts – also known as pods, glamping huts resemble sheds and are usually made from natural materials like wood. Huts can range from simple spaces with beds to eco-pods with solar power and kitchens.
  • Shepherd’s huts – were traditionally used by shepherds during lambing season in the UK and date back to the 15th century. They were usually made from wood with iron roofs and had wheels so they were raised off the ground and could be easily moved. Shepherd’s huts are now commonly used as glamping accommodation and may come equipped with heating, kitchenettes and beds.
  • Yurts – these round tents were historically used by nomads in Central Asia, particularly in Mongolia. The portable tents consisted of a wooden structure covered with felt or animal skin. Today, yurts are made from more modern materials and are a great glamping option, with luxurious interiors and skylights.
  • Safari tents – were used in the 1900s by rich Europeans visiting Africa. Luxury safari camps are still popular today in wildlife-spotting destinations like Kenya and Tanzania, as well as for glamping holidays around the world. In the UK, safari-style tents make excellent group accommodation for events like festivals and family holidays.
  • Treehouses – lavish treehouses offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, as well as the privacy of being nestled among the treetops. Treehouses are available all over the world, from the UK to South American jungles, with unique designs and fancy amenities.
  • Bell tents – similar to a yurt or safari tent, bell tents are supported by a central pole and covered with canvas. Bell tents provide more spacious accommodation for families and groups.
