Choose the correct First Aid Course
In comparison to some European countries such as Finland the UK has higher mortality rates due to poor first aid awareness and response.
There can often be an attitude of fear or misunderstanding when it comes to first aid. In particular to that of being liable in the event of administering first aid. To date there has been no liability case awarded against a person carrying out first aid.
When it comes to common first aid training the like of St Johns, Red Cross or in our case WorkSafe offer a suite of first aid training courses. Which one you choose is easier than you might think because there are only two types of Health and Safety Executive approved first aid courses. First Aid at Work (FAW) which is a minimum three day course and Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) which is a minimum 6 hour course.
Recommended best practice is to have a minimum number of FAW trained personnel supported by a larger number of EFAW trained personnel. Ideally there should always be a FAW trained person available onsite during all opening/work times with EFAW trained personnel for support.
e.g. At ACE Adventure all senior management that work onsite and activity trip leaders are FAW trained. All other activity staff are EFAW trained. All other staff are encouraged to be EFAW trained.
